The iSport team was established in 2004, the final year of the Formula 3000 series, before entering the newly labelled GP2 championship the following season.
In the team’s first year of competition, Can Artam and future Formula One driver Scott Speed powered the outfit to fourth overall in the Constructors’ Championship.
In 2006, iSport greeted a top podium step for the first time courtesy of victory for Ernesto Viso at Imola; with the Brazilian and German team-mate Timo Glock mounted a successful campaign as the team progressed to third overall in the final standings.
With the team’s gradual momentum continuing to build, the ultimate prize came in 2007 as Glock achieved a total of five race victories en route to the GP2 Championship title; Timo’s success saw him hired by Toyota and compete in his first full season of F1 in 2008.
iSport missed out on retaining the crown by a whisker in 2008, with Bruno Senna the leading contender. This year, Dutchman Giedo van der Garde and Brazilian team-mate Diego Nunes have been presented with the task of reclaiming the lost title.
Diego brings with him a year of GP2 experience whereas Giedo is competing in his first season in the F1 feeder series; that has not restrained him, though, as van der Garde took his first GP2 victory at the Hungaroring and the team’s first of the year.
